அமரும் அமரர்

When the final hour of death arrives,
when even great beings such as Brahma, Vishnu, and others become fearful and helpless before the power of Time,

O Lord of the universe,
You who are the complete essence beyond the body, mind, senses, and all instruments of perception,

Grant me Your grace
so that my mind may remain firmly fixed at Your sacred feet,
my life-breath may rise steadily through the proper spiritual path,
and I may attain the supreme state without wavering, even for a moment.

At that very instant,
when the body loses its strength and worldly awareness fades,
bless me with the gift of reaching Your divine abode.

O Hero!
You who waged war against the mighty armies of the asuras (demons),
and destroyed them with Your powerful Vel (spear), observing the sacred vow of righteousness,

To the rhythmic sounds
"Thagurtha Thagurthathigu, Thigurtha Thigurthathigu,
Tharara Rararariri Thagurtha..."
(onomatopoeic syllables describing the beats of divine music and dance),

You come riding majestically on the peacock,
O Son of the Daughter of the Himalayas (Parvati),
O our Lord and Master,

O Supreme Guru,
who joyfully resides in the beautiful city of Mayilai (Mylapore),
please bestow Your grace upon me.

The central theme of this hymn is a heartfelt prayer to Lord Murugan to grant spiritual remembrance, steadfastness, and liberation at the moment of death, so that the devotee may attain His divine feet instead of being overcome by fear and worldly attachment.
