Selected Verses
Very First Thevaram Verse Ever Composed
O one with a flower in the ear, riding the bull — God who possesses the pure white cremation ground! The one from our land whose flute-like mouth has blossomed — the Kauniya (Sambandar) garland of good Tamil — praised by Brahma and countless celestials — I have worshipped at the feet of the devotees who sing of him — this was practised in the waters of Palani. Composed by Sambandar at age 3, after Goddess Parvati fed him divine milk at Sirkazhi.
Sacred Ash Hymn
The mantra is sacred ash! The highest thing for the celestials is sacred ash! The beautiful thing is sacred ash! The thing worthy of praise is sacred ash! The tantra is sacred ash! The essence of religion is sacred ash! The sacred ash of the one whose half is Uma of coral-red lips — the Lord of Thiruvalavai! Used by Sambandar to cure the hunchback Pandya king of Madurai.
Benediction (sung at end of all Thevaram)
Long live the learned, the celestials, the cows! May cool rains fall, may the king flourish! May all evil sink! May the name of Shiva surround everything — may the world be without suffering! Chanted at the close of all Thevaram recitations in temples to this day.
Selected Verses
Long live Namasivaya! Long live the feet of the Lord! Long live the feet of the one who never leaves my heart for an instant! Long live the feet of the jewel-Guru who ruled Kokali! Long live the feet of the one who stands as the scriptures themselves! Long live the feet of the Lord who is one and many!
Bold Proclamation of Faith
Who is more cruel now — I will stand and proclaim to the world for all to hear, that I am the servant of our Lord! Composed by Appar while imprisoned and tortured by the Pallava king for his Shaiva faith — he remained unbroken.
Selected Verses
First Poem of Sundarar
O Madman! O one who wears the crescent moon! O great Lord! O my origin, the Vedic one worshipped by the celestials, riding the bull! O primal form of Thiruvarur surrounded by bee-filled gardens! O Father — I, your devotee, am crying out. Take me as your own! Sundarar's very first poem, composed at 16 when Shiva disrupted his wedding to claim him as a devotee.
Most Famous Sundarar Verse
What are you to me — my mother or my father? Both my father and you — take me into yourself! O nephew of Vishnu — O cool one who has permanently taken residence in my heart without change! The uniquely intimate friendship between Sundarar and Shiva — no other saint addressed God quite like this.
About Thevaram ·
Thevaram forms the first seven of the twelve Thirumurai and represents the foundation of Tamil Shaiva devotional literature. Composed in the 7th–8th centuries CE by the three great Nayanmars — Sambandar, Appar, and Sundarar — these hymns are sung in Tamil Shiva temples every day, in the original ancient Tamil musical modes (pan) in which they were composed over 1,300 years ago.
These hymns started the great Bhakti movement in South India — a revolution in which personal, emotional devotion to God replaced purely ritualistic religion. The Nayanmars, who came from all social backgrounds, composed in Tamil, in accessible language, making devotion available to everyone.
