📖 அதிகார விளக்கம்
கடவுள் வாழ்த்து அதிகாரம் திருக்குறளின் தொடக்க அதிகாரமாகும். கல்வி, அறிவு, ஒழுக்கம், மனஅமைதி, பிறவிப் பெருங்கடலைக் கடத்தல் ஆகியவற்றிற்கும் இறைநம்பிக்கை அடிப்படையாக இருப்பதை இந்தப் பத்து குறள்கள் கூறுகின்றன. இங்கு “கடவுள்” என்பது வெறும் வழிபாட்டு பொருளாக மட்டும் அல்லாமல், வாழ்வின் முதல் காரணம், நெறி, அறிவு, அமைதி ஆகியவற்றின் மூலமாக விளக்கப்படுகிறது.

This opening chapter places God as the first principle of knowledge, conduct and inner peace. Valluvar presents devotion not merely as ritual, but as the foundation of learning, moral clarity, freedom from anxiety and the ability to cross the ocean of worldly life.

குறள் 1
அகர முதல எழுத்தெல்லாம் ஆதி
பகவன் முதற்றே உலகு.
As the letter 'A' is the beginning of all letters, so is God the beginning of all the world.
குறள் 2
கற்றதனால் ஆய பயனென்கொல் வாலறிவன்
தாள்தொழாஅர் என்னும் நலம்.
What benefit has one gained from learning, if one does not worship the feet of the Pure One (God) who is perfect wisdom?
குறள் 3
மலர்மிசை ஏகினான் மாணடி சேர்ந்தார்
நிலமிசை நீடுவாழ் வார்.
Those who take refuge at the glorious feet of Him who moves on the flower (lotus) will long flourish on earth.
குறள் 4
வேண்டுதல் வேண்டாமை இலானடி சேர்ந்தார்க்கு
யாண்டும் இடும்பை இல.
Those who take refuge at the feet of the One who is free from desire and aversion will have no sorrow anywhere.
குறள் 5
இருள்சேர் இருவினையும் சேரா இறைவன்
பொருள்சேர் புகழ்புரிந்தார் மாட்டு.
The two dark deeds (sin/karma) will not cling to those who cherish the glory of God, which is filled with meaning.
குறள் 6
பொறிவாயில் ஐந்தவித்தான் பொய்தீர் ஒழுக்க
நெறிநின்றார் நீடுவாழ் வார்.
Those who stand firm in the truthful conduct of Him who has subdued the five senses through their doors will live long.
குறள் 7
தனக்குவமை இல்லாதான் தாள்சேர்ந்தார்க் கல்லால்
மனக்கவலை மாய்வதெவ் வாறு.
How else can mental anxiety be dispelled, except for those who seek refuge at the feet of the Incomparable One?
குறள் 8
அறவாழி அந்தணன் தாள்சேர்ந்தார்க் கல்லால்
பிறவாழி நீந்தல் அரிது.
For those who do not take refuge at the feet of the Brahman (holy one) who is the ocean of virtue, it is difficult to cross the other oceans (of life).
குறள் 9
கோளில் பொறியில் குணமிலவே எண்குணத்தான்
தாளை வணங்காத் தலை.
A head that does not bow before the feet of Him who has eight virtues is no better than a sense organ without its proper function.
குறள் 10
பிறவிப் பெருங்கடல் நீந்துவர் நீந்தார்
இறைவன் அடிசேரா தார்.
Those who do not seek refuge at the feet of God will not be able to cross the great ocean of births; those who do will cross it.
