தமிழ்நாட்டில் 63 நாயன்மார்கள் சிவனுக்கு அர்ப்பணித்த வாழ்க்கை வாழ்ந்தனர். கண்ணப்ப நாயனார் தன் கண்ணை பிடுங்கி படைத்தார். வேட்டுவ நாயனார் தன் காதை வெட்டினார். சிறுத்தொண்ட நாயனார் தன் மகனை படைத்தார். இவர்களில் வேட்டுவன், நாவிதன், குயவன் என்று அனைத்து சாதியினரும் உள்ளனர். சாதி வேறுபாடு இல்லாமல் சிவ பக்தி காட்டிய மஹான்கள். பெரியபுராணம் — சேக்கிழார் இவர்கள் கதைகளை எழுதினார். 5ஆம் வேதம் என்று போற்றப்படுகிறது.
The 63 Nayanmars were Tamil Shaivite saints who gave their lives in absolute devotion to Lord Shiva. Kannappar plucked his own eye to replace Shiva's bleeding stone eye. These saints came from all castes — hunters, barbers, potters, merchants — proving devotion transcends social hierarchy. The Periyapuranam by Sekkilar narrates all 63 stories and is called the fifth Veda of Tamil Shaivism.
