ஒரு முறை பிரம்மனும் விஷ்ணுவும் தங்களுக்குள் யார் உயர்ந்தவர் என்று வாதாடினர். இந்த வாதத்தை முடிவுக்குக் கொண்டுவர சிவபெருமான் ஒரு முடிவில்லா நெருப்புத் தூணாக தோன்றினார். 'இந்தத் தூணின் முடிவைக் கண்டுபிடிப்பவரே உயர்ந்தவர்' என்று அறிவித்தார்.
பிரம்மா அன்னப் பறவையாக மேலே பறந்தார்; விஷ்ணு பன்றியாக மண்ணைத் தோண்டிக் கீழே சென்றார். இருவரும் ஆயிரக்கணக்கான ஆண்டுகள் தேடியும், தூணின் முடிவைக் காணவில்லை. களைப்படைந்த பிரம்மா, பொய்யாக 'நான் முடிவைக் கண்டேன்' என்று கூறினார் — ஒரு தாழம்பூவின் சாட்சியுடன். சிவபெருமான் இதை அறிந்து கோபம் கொண்டார், பிரம்மாவுக்கு உலகில் கோயில் இல்லாமல் போகட்டும் என சபித்தார்.
இந்த நெருப்புத் தூணே திருவண்ணாமலையில் அருணாசல மலையாக வடிவெடுத்துள்ளது என நம்பப்படுகிறது. 20ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில் ரமண மகரிஷி இங்கு ஞானம் பெற்று, 'அருணாசலமே சிவன்; அதை வெறுமனே கண்டாலே போதும், முக்தி கிடைக்கும்' என்று கூறினார். ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் கார்த்திகை மாதத்தில் மலை உச்சியில் பெரிய தீபம் ஏற்றப்பட்டு, லட்சக்கணக்கான பக்தர்கள் மலையை வலம் வருகின்றனர்.
Once, Brahma and Vishnu argued over who was supreme. To settle the dispute, Lord Shiva manifested as an endless column of fire and declared: 'Whoever finds the end of this pillar is the greater one.'
Brahma flew upward as a swan; Vishnu dug downward as a boar. Both searched for thousands of years but could never find the end. Exhausted, Brahma lied that he had found the top, calling a screwpine flower as false witness. When Shiva discovered the lie, he cursed Brahma to never have temples built for him anywhere in the world.
This infinite fire column is believed to have taken physical form as Arunachala Hill in Thiruvannamalai. In the 20th century, the sage Ramana Maharshi attained enlightenment here and declared: 'Arunachala itself is Shiva; merely seeing it grants liberation.' Every year during the Tamil month of Karthigai, a massive flame is lit atop the hill, and millions of devotees walk the sacred circumambulation path around the mountain.
