தமிழ்நாட்டில் 63 நாயன்மார்கள் சிவனுக்கு அர்ப்பணித்த வாழ்க்கை வாழ்ந்தனர். கண்ணப்ப நாயனார் தன் கண்ணை பிடுங்கி படைத்தார். வேட்டுவ நாயனார் தன் காதை வெட்டினார். வேட்டுவன், நாவிதன், குயவன் என்று அனைத்து சாதியினரும் உள்ளனர் — சாதி வேறுபாடு இல்லாமல் சிவ பக்தி காட்டியவர்கள். சேக்கிழார் பெரியபுராணம் இவர்கள் கதைகளை விவரிக்கிறது.
The 63 Nayanmars gave their lives in absolute devotion to Shiva. Kannappar plucked his own eye to replace Shiva's bleeding stone eye. These saints came from all castes — hunters, barbers, potters — proving devotion transcends social hierarchy. The Periyapuranam by Sekkilar narrates all 63 lives and is called the fifth Veda of Tamil Shaivism.
