Agathiyar is revered as the father of both Tamil literature and Siddha medicine. Tradition holds that he travelled from the north to the south, codified the grammar of the Tamil language, and composed the first Tamil grammar text, the Agathiyam. His meditation site on Pothigai Hill remains a sacred pilgrimage destination to this day.
Agathiyar is also considered the original master of Siddha medicine. He studied the medicinal properties of herbs, metals, and minerals, discovering remedies for countless ailments. His text, the 'Agathiyar 12000', remains one of the foundational works of Siddha medicine, still consulted by practitioners today.
Agathiyar even has a place in astronomy — the star known as Canopus, visible in the southern hemisphere, is called 'Agathiyar Natchathiram' in India. Coastal communities of Tamil Nadu historically used the rising of this star to predict the changing seasons. His teaching, 'Mannil nalla vannam vaazhalam' — one can live well and gracefully on this earth — remains cherished today as guidance for a simple, fulfilling life.
