“இரவச்சம்” அதிகாரம் இந்தத் தலைப்பை மையமாகக் கொண்டு பத்து குறள்கள் மூலம் அதன் பொருள், பயன்பாடு, வாழ்வியல் முக்கியத்துவம் ஆகியவற்றை விளக்குகிறது. பொருட்பாலில் வரும் இந்த அதிகாரம் சமூக வாழ்வு, அரசியல், தலைமை, நீதிநிலை, நட்பு, சொல், செயல் போன்ற நடைமுறை வாழ்க்கை நெறிகளை விளக்குகிறது. இந்த அதிகாரத்தின் தொடக்கக் குறள்கள் “கரவாது உவந்தீயும் கண்ணன்னார் கண்ணும்nஇரவாமை கோடி உறும்.” போன்ற கருத்துகளால் தலைப்பின் பொருளை விரிவாக்குகின்றன.

இரந்தும் உயிர்வாழ்தல் வேண்டின் பரந்து

தெண்ணீர் அடுபுற்கை ஆயினும் தாள்தந்தது
உண்ணலின் ஊங்கினிய தில்.
Mere gruel made of clear water tastes sweetestnWhen it is earned through earnest effort.

ஆவிற்கு நீரென்று இரப்பினும் நாவிற்கு
இரவின் இளிவந்த தில்.
Nothing but begging shames the tongue morenEven if what is sought is water for the cow.

இரப்பன் இரப்பாரை எல்லாம் இரப்பின்
கரப்பார் இரவன்மின் என்று.
I beg of all beggars: beg if you must,nBut beg not from those who conceal.

இரவென்னும் ஏமாப்பில் தோணி கரவென்னும்
பார்தாக்கப் பக்கு விடும்.
The fragile boat of begging will be wreckednWhen it knocks against the rock of refusal.

இரவுள்ள உள்ளம் உருகும் கரவுள்ள
உள்ளதூஉம் இன்றிக் கெடும்.
When I think of those who beg, my heart melts;nWhen I think of those who refuse, it wilts.

கரப்பவர்க்கு யாங்கொளிக்கும் கொல்லோ இரப்பவர்
சொல்லாடப் போஒம் உயிர்.
When one asks but is denied, his life departs;nWhere will he hide, the one who denies.
