“புறங்கூறாமை” அதிகாரம் இந்தத் தலைப்பை மையமாகக் கொண்டு பத்து குறள்கள் மூலம் அதன் பொருள், பயன்பாடு, வாழ்வியல் முக்கியத்துவம் ஆகியவற்றை விளக்குகிறது. அறத்துப்பாலில் வரும் இந்த அதிகாரம் தனிமனித ஒழுக்கம், குடும்பநெறி, கருணை, மனத் தூய்மை போன்ற அறவாழ்வின் அடிப்படையை விளக்குகிறது. இந்த அதிகாரத்தின் தொடக்கக் குறள்கள் “அயலான் குற்றம் அறியாமை வேண்டும் வேண்டுவது ஆகும் விழுப்பினுக்கு.” போன்ற கருத்துகளால் தலைப்பின் பொருளை விரிவாக்குகின்றன.

Greatness covers (one's own) flaw; smallness reveals it by giving it to others (by gossiping).

கண்ணிற்கு அணிகலம் கண்ணோட்டம் ஒண்ணுதல்
பண்ணிற்கு அணிகலம் பண்பு.
The ornament of the eye is the gentle glance; the ornament of music is character.

கரப்பவர் கரப்பினும் காட்டுவர் கரப்பவர்க்கு
மாட்டா வருத்தப் படும்.
Even those who hide (others' faults) reveal them to those who can hide — and those who cannot endure suffering.

புறம்கூறி எனைத்தொன்றும் வாழ்வாரோ வாழார்
வறும்பேர் நகைப்பிற்கு உரைக்கும்.
Will those who backbite thrive at all? They will not — they only earn empty ridicule.

புறம்பேசும் பேர்கொலை உண்ண ஒட்டா மேல்
விறல்வேல் ஏந்தி விடும்.
Backbiting is like murder — it stabs with a sword even without physical killing.

அறிவுடையார் ஆவதறிவார் புறங்கூறல்
தெறிவுடையார் காட்டார் தினை.
The wise who know what will come do not backbite even by a millet grain's worth.

மறைமாசு இல்லா ஒழுக்கத்தோ டுண்மை
ஒறாத ஒழுக்கம் தலை.
Conduct that is stainless in secret and true — that is the highest conduct.

புறம்கூறுவார் அவர்நெஞ்சு படர்ந்து திரிவர்
சுரம்கொண்டு சோர்ந்தவர் போல்.
