ஒரு வேட்டுவன் காட்டில் இரவை கழிக்க வேண்டியதாயிற்று. மரத்தில் ஏறினான். குளிரால் தூக்கம் வராமல் இருக்க வில்வ இலைகளை கீழே போட்டுக்கொண்டே இருந்தான். அதன் கீழே சிவலிங்கம் இருந்தது. அறியாமலேயே வழிபாடு செய்தான். விடியற்காலை யமதூதர்கள் வந்தனர். சிவதூதர்கள் தடுத்தனர் — ஒரே இரவில் சிவராத்திரி விரதம் கடைப்பிடித்தான் என்று. சிவராத்திரியில் நால் பிரஹர வழிபாடு — நட்டிரவில் சிவன் வெளிப்படுவதாக நம்பிக்கை.
A hunter stranded in a forest climbed a tree to avoid wild animals. Unable to sleep in the cold, he kept awake by dropping leaves onto the ground. Unknown to him, a Shiva linga was beneath — he had unknowingly offered Bilva leaves all night. At dawn, Yama's messengers came for him but Shiva's attendants intervened — he had observed Shivaratri. This story shows that sincere devotion, even unknowing, reaches Shiva. Maha Shivaratri is observed with four rounds of worship through the night — the most sacred night in the Shaivite calendar.
