கார்த்திகை தீபம் தமிழகத்தின் மிகப் பழமையான திருவிழாக்களில் ஒன்று — சங்க இலக்கியங்களிலேயே குறிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ளது. இது சிவபெருமான் நெருப்புத் தூணாக தோன்றிய நிகழ்வை நினைவுகூரும் விழாவாகும். கார்த்திகை மாதத்தில் பௌர்ணமி நாளில், திருவண்ணாமலை அருணாசலேஸ்வரர் கோயிலில் இந்த விழா மிகச் சிறப்பாகக் கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது.
இந்த நாளில் மலை உச்சியில் ஒரு பெரிய தீபம் ஏற்றப்படுகிறது — அதில் ஆயிரக்கணக்கான கிலோ நெய்யும் பருத்தித் திரியும் பயன்படுத்தப்படுகின்றன. இந்தத் தீபம் பல மைல் தொலைவில் இருந்தும் தெரியும். இதை சிவலிங்க ஜோதி என்றும் அழைக்கின்றனர் — சிவன் நெருப்புத் தூணாக மாறிய அந்த அனாதி நிகழ்வின் அடையாளமாக.
இந்த நாளில் தமிழகம் முழுவதும் வீடுகளிலும், கோயில்களிலும் தீபங்கள் ஏற்றப்படுகின்றன. இதனால் இதை 'தமிழர் தீபாவளி' அல்லது 'தேவ தீபாவளி' என்றும் அழைக்கின்றனர். மலையை வலம் வரும் 'கிரிவலம்' இந்நாளில் மிகப் பெரிய அளவில் நடைபெறுகிறது — லட்சக்கணக்கான பக்தர்கள் 14 கி.மீ நீளமுள்ள பாதையில் வெறும் காலுடன் நடந்து வலம் வருகிறார்கள்.
Karthigai Deepam is one of Tamil Nadu's most ancient festivals, mentioned even in classical Sangam literature. It commemorates the moment Shiva manifested as an infinite column of fire. Celebrated on the full moon day of the Tamil month of Karthigai, the festival reaches its grandest expression at the Arunachaleswarar Temple in Thiruvannamalai.
On this day, a massive flame is lit atop Arunachala Hill, fed by thousands of kilograms of ghee and a giant cotton wick. The flame is visible for miles around and is known as the Shivalinga Jyothi — a living symbol of that primordial moment when Shiva became the column of fire.
Across Tamil Nadu, homes and temples light rows of oil lamps on this day, which is why it is often called 'the Tamil Deepavali' or 'Deva Deepavali' — the festival of light for the gods. The sacred circumambulation of the hill, known as Girivalam, takes place on a massive scale during this festival, with millions of devotees walking barefoot along the 14-kilometre path around the mountain.
