Biography in English
Ramadevar (also known as Yakob Siddhar or Siddhar Yakob) is perhaps the most extraordinary bridge-builder among the 18 Tamil Siddhars — a sage who synthesized Islamic Sufi mysticism and Tamil Shaiva Siddhar philosophy into a unified vision of divine reality.
His Arabic name 'Yakob' (Jacob) indicates his Islamic background, while 'Ramadevar' (Servant of Rama) shows his absorption into the Hindu devotional tradition. This dual naming reflects his central teaching: the divine transcends the boundaries of religion, and the sincere seeker will find the same truth whether approaching through the Quran or the Agamas.
According to traditional accounts, Ramadevar was initiated into both the Siddhar tradition and the Sufi tradition. The Sufi tradition of Islam, like the Siddhar tradition, emphasizes direct mystical experience of the divine over outward religious observance. Both traditions use poetry, music, and altered states of consciousness as vehicles for accessing divine presence. Both emphasize the importance of the guru (Pir in Sufi tradition) as the essential guide to inner experience.
His primary sacred site — the Ervadi Dargah near Rameswaram — stands as a living monument to his integrative vision. Hindus come to worship at what they see as a Siddhar's samadhi; Muslims come to pray at what they see as a Sufi saint's dargah. Both communities find their faith confirmed in the same sacred space — a practical demonstration of his teaching that all genuine paths lead to the same divine reality.
Ramadevar's attributed texts in Tamil show familiarity with both Quranic theology and Shaiva philosophy, weaving terminology from both traditions into a seamless exposition of mystical truth. His use of Allah and Shiva as interchangeable names for the same divine reality was both philosophically profound and practically courageous in a context of periodic religious tension.
