Biography in English

Patanjali (Tamil: Patanjali) stands at a unique intersection of traditions — claimed by both Sanskrit and Tamil learning as one of their greatest authorities. In the Sanskrit scholarly tradition, he is the author of the Mahabhashya (Great Commentary) on Panini's Ashtadhyayi grammar. In the Tamil Siddhar tradition, he is one of the 18 Siddhars who received the Shaiva transmission from Nandi's lineage.

His most celebrated work is the Yoga Sutras — 196 concise aphorisms (sutras) that constitute the foundational philosophical framework for classical yoga. Written in masterfully economical Sanskrit, these sutras have inspired countless commentaries and translations. The opening sutra — 'Atha Yoga Anushasanam' (Now, instruction in yoga) — and the definition — 'Yogash Chitta Vritti Nirodhah' (Yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of consciousness) — are among the most quoted sentences in world spiritual literature.

The Yoga Sutras organize yogic practice into the famous Ashtanga (eight-limbed) framework:
1. Yama — ethical restraints (non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing, celibacy, non-covetousness)
2. Niyama — ethical observances (purity, contentment, self-discipline, self-study, surrender to God)
3. Asana — stable, comfortable posture
4. Pranayama — regulation of breath/life force
5. Pratyahara — withdrawal of senses from external objects
6. Dharana — concentration (holding mind on one object)
7. Dhyana — meditation (sustained, unbroken flow of attention)
8. Samadhi — complete absorption (identity with the object of meditation)

This eight-limbed system has become the global standard for understanding and teaching yoga across cultures, traditions, and centuries. Modern yoga as practiced in studios worldwide traces its philosophical backbone directly to Patanjali's sutras.

In Tamil Siddhar iconography, Patanjali is depicted as half-human, half-serpent — the upper human portion representing consciousness and wisdom, the lower serpent portion representing the coiled Kundalini energy. He is said to have descended from Adishesha (the cosmic serpent who supports the universe) specifically to systematize yoga knowledge for humanity's benefit.

Tamil Siddha texts attribute to him the 'Patanjali Vaithiyam' — a medical text dealing with specific diseases and their Siddha-based treatments. Whether this represents the same Patanjali who wrote the Yoga Sutras or a later figure who adopted the name, the text demonstrates that yoga and medicine were understood as inseparable in the Siddha worldview.

Siddha Medicine in English

Patanjali's medical contributions span two traditions. The Yoga Sutras' prescriptions for physical posture (asana), breath regulation (pranayama), and sensory withdrawal (pratyahara) constitute a comprehensive therapeutic system for stress, anxiety, and psychosomatic conditions. The attributed Patanjali Vaithiyam addresses specific diseases through Siddha preparations. Modern research has validated many of these techniques for conditions ranging from hypertension to depression.

Temple Connection

• Chidambaram Nataraja Temple — Tamil tradition places Patanjali here to witness Shiva's cosmic dance
• Rameswaram — connection in some Siddhar traditions
• Guru lineage: Nandi → Tirumular → Patanjali (in Tamil tradition)
