Biography in English
Dhanvantari holds a position unique among the 18 Tamil Siddhars — he is not primarily a human teacher but a divine manifestation, specifically the god of medicine. His inclusion in the Siddhar list signals the Tamil tradition's claim that Siddha medicine and Ayurveda share a common divine origin.
According to the Puranic tradition, Dhanvantari emerged from the cosmic ocean (Kshira Sagara) during the great churning by gods and demons (Samudra Manthan/Churning of the Milk Ocean). He arose holding a pot of Amrita (nectar of immortality) in his hands — symbolizing that divine medicine is the gift of immortality, the divine answer to human mortality and suffering.
His earthly manifestations include the King of Varanasi (Kashi) who received his teachings, and Sushruta — his most famous disciple, who systematized surgical medicine in the Sushruta Samhita. This text describes over 700 medicinal plants, 121 surgical instruments, 64 procedures for internal medicine, and a range of surgical techniques that were genuinely revolutionary for their time — including early forms of cataract surgery, rhinoplasty (reconstructive nose surgery), and stitching techniques.
The Tamil Siddhar tradition's inclusion of Dhanvantari acknowledges the fundamental unity between Siddha medicine (which developed primarily in the Tamil south) and Ayurveda (which developed primarily in the Sanskrit north). Both systems share the Tridosha framework (Tridosha in Ayurveda becomes Mukkutram/Muppini in Siddha), both use similar classification systems for medicinal plants, and both trace their ultimate authority to divine revelation.
Dhanvantari is worshipped on Dhanteras — the day before Diwali — which is also National Ayurveda Day in India. Medical professionals, pharmacies, and health workers traditionally offer prayers to Dhanvantari on this day, acknowledging that healing is ultimately a sacred trust from the divine to humanity.

• 64 preparatory procedures for surgery
• The earliest documented techniques for cataract surgery, rhinoplasty, and wound stitching
• Classification of 8 branches of medicine (Ashtanga Ayurveda)
