பாண்டிய மன்னர் மலையத்துவாஜன் யாகம் செய்தார். யாக குண்டத்திலிருந்து மூன்று மார்புகளோடு ஒரு பெண் குழந்தை தோன்றினாள். தெய்வீக குரல்: 'தக்க காதலனை சந்திக்கும்போது மூன்றாவது மார்பு மறையும்.' மீனாட்சி என்று பெயரிட்ட குழந்தை வீர வீராங்கனையாக வளர்ந்து உலகை வென்றாள். சிவனை சந்தித்தவுடன் அவள் அமைதியானாள் — மூன்றாவது மார்பு மறைந்தது. சிவன் சுந்தரேஸ்வரராக மணந்தார். இந்த திருமணம் மதுரை சித்திரை திருவிழாவில் ஆண்டுதோறும் கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது.
Pandya king Malayadhwaja performed a yajna. A girl with three breasts emerged from the sacred fire. A divine voice proclaimed: the third breast will vanish when she meets her true love. Named Meenakshi, she grew into a fierce warrior queen who conquered kingdoms. Meeting Shiva, she calmed — and the third breast vanished as prophesied. Shiva married her as Sundareswarar. This divine wedding is celebrated annually as the Chithirai festival in Madurai, one of India's grandest temple celebrations.
