According to the Skanda Purana, the demon king Soorapadman performed severe penance and gained a boon to conquer the three worlds. He imprisoned the celestial gods and plunged the universe into terror. In response to the gods' plea, Lord Shiva manifested Murugan as his six-faced son, charged with the task of destroying Soorapadman.
A fierce six-day battle raged between Murugan and Soorapadman. In the end, Murugan hurled his divine spear and split in two the mango tree form that Soorapadman had taken. From the two halves emerged a peacock and a rooster. Murugan accepted the peacock as his vehicle and the rooster as the emblem on his battle flag.
The site of this battle is today known as Thiruchendur — one of Murugan's six sacred abodes, and the only Murugan temple situated directly on the ocean shore. Every year, the six-day Skanda Sashti festival celebrated during the Tamil month of Aippasi commemorates this victory. Millions of devotees bathe in the sea here and come to seek Murugan's darshan during this sacred period.
