மார்கழி மாதம் சுக்லபக்ஷ ஏகாதசி, வைகுண்ட ஏகாதசி என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறது. இந்த நாளில் விஷ்ணு கோயில்களில் 'வைகுண்ட வாசல்' அல்லது 'பரமபத வாசல்' திறக்கப்படும் என்று நம்பப்படுகிறது. இந்த வாசல் வழியாக கடந்து சென்று இறைவனை தரிசிப்பவர்களுக்கு மோட்சம் கிடைக்கும் என்பது பக்தர்களின் ஆழ்ந்த நம்பிக்கை.
ஐதீகப்படி, முரன் என்ற அசுரன் தேவர்களை வென்று துன்புறுத்திக் கொண்டிருந்தான். விஷ்ணு பகவான் அவனுடன் போரிட்டு, தனது 'யோகமாயை' சக்தியால் அவனை அழித்தார். இந்த சக்தியே 'வைகுண்ட ஏகாதசி' தேவியாக போற்றப்படுகிறாள். இந்த வெற்றியின் நினைவாகவே இந்த நாள் சிறப்பு வாய்ந்ததாக கருதப்படுகிறது.
ஸ்ரீரங்கம் ரங்கநாதசுவாமி கோயில் உள்ளிட்ட பல வைஷ்ணவ தலங்களில் இந்நாளில் பெரும் திருவிழா நடைபெறுகிறது. பக்தர்கள் முழு நாள் உபவாசம் இருந்து, இரவு முழுவதும் விழித்திருந்து நாமஜபம் செய்து, அதிகாலையில் வைகுண்ட வாசல் வழியாக இறைவனைத் தரிசிக்கின்றனர். இது தமிழக வைஷ்ணவ பக்தர்களுக்கு ஆண்டின் மிக முக்கியமான நாளாகும்.
The eleventh day (Ekadashi) of the waxing moon in the Tamil month of Margazhi is celebrated as Vaikunta Ekadashi. On this day, it is believed that the 'Gates of Vaikunta' — Vishnu's heavenly abode — open at Vishnu temples. Devotees hold a deep belief that passing through this gate and beholding the deity on this day grants liberation, moksha.
According to legend, a demon named Muran was tormenting the celestial gods. Lord Vishnu fought him and destroyed him through his power of Yogamaya, a divine energy that is itself revered as the goddess of Vaikunta Ekadashi. This day commemorates that victory and is considered especially sacred for this reason.
Major Vaishnava temples, including the Ranganathaswamy Temple at Srirangam, host grand festivals on this day. Devotees observe a full day's fast, stay awake through the night chanting the divine names, and pass through the Vaikunta Dwaram (Gate of Heaven) at dawn to behold the deity. It remains one of the most significant days of the year for Tamil Vaishnava devotees.
