தஞ்சாவூர் அருகே உள்ள திருநள்ளாறு, நவகிரகங்களில் சனி பகவானுக்கு உரிய தலமாக போற்றப்படுகிறது. இங்கு சனீஸ்வரன் மற்ற கிரகங்களைப் போல் சிறிய சந்நிதியில் இல்லாமல், தர்பாரண்யேஸ்வரர் கோயிலுக்குள் தனி கருவறையில், மற்ற கிரகங்களை விட உயரத்தில், மகுடம் சூடிய மன்னராக வீற்றிருக்கிறார்.
ஐதீகப்படி, சனி பகவான் இங்கு சிவபெருமானை வழிபட்டு, தர்மத்தை நிலைநாட்டும் அதிகாரத்தை பெற்றார். எனவே இவரை 'தர்பாரண்யேஸ்வரர் சன்னிதியில் முடிசூடிய சனீஸ்வரன்' என்று அழைக்கின்றனர். சனி தோஷம் உள்ளவர்கள், ஏழரை சனி, அஷ்டம சனி பாதிப்புள்ளவர்கள் இங்கு வந்து நல்லெண்ணெய் அபிஷேகம் செய்வது வழக்கம்.
இந்த ஊரின் அருகே, காவிரி ஆற்றின் கிளையான திருநள்ளாறு ஆற்றில் நீராடி, பின் கோயிலுக்குச் சென்று வழிபடுவது மரபு. ஒவ்வொரு சனிக்கிழமையும், குறிப்பாக சனி பெயர்ச்சி நாட்களில், ஆயிரக்கணக்கான பக்தர்கள் இங்கு வந்து சனி பகவானின் அருளை வேண்டுகின்றனர்.
Thirunallar, near Thanjavur, is revered as the sacred abode of Shani (Saturn) among the nine planetary deities. Unlike other planets who occupy small shrines, Shani here resides as a crowned monarch in his own separate sanctum within the Darbharanyeswarar Temple, positioned higher than the other grahas.
According to legend, Shani worshipped Lord Shiva here and was granted the authority to uphold dharma and justice. He is therefore called the 'crowned Saturn of Darbharanyeswarar shrine.' Devotees suffering from Shani Dosha, Sade Sati (seven-and-a-half year Saturn period) or Ashtama Shani come here to perform abhishekam with sesame oil for relief.
It is traditional to first bathe in the nearby Thirunallar River, a tributary of the Kaveri, before entering the temple to pray. Every Saturday, and especially during Shani Peyarchi (Saturn's transit days), thousands of devotees travel here seeking Shani's blessings and protection from misfortune.
