நாரத முனிவர் ஒரு ஞான பழத்துடன் கைலாயம் வந்தார். அந்தப் பழத்தை யார் முதலில் உலகை வலம் வந்து திரும்புகிறார்களோ அவர்களுக்குக் கொடுப்பதாக சிவபெருமான் அறிவித்தார். முருகன் உடனே தன் மயில் வாகனத்தில் ஏறி உலகை வலம் வர புறப்பட்டார்.
ஆனால் கணேசர் சாமர்த்தியமாக சிந்தித்தார். அவர் தன் தாய் தந்தையரான பார்வதியையும் சிவனையும் மட்டும் வலம் வந்து, 'பெற்றோரே என் முழு உலகம்' என்று கூறி பழத்தைப் பெற்றுக் கொண்டார். உலகை வலம் வந்து திரும்பிய முருகன், கணேசர் ஏற்கனவே பழத்தைப் பெற்றதை அறிந்து மனம் வருந்தினார்.
கோபமும் வருத்தமும் கொண்ட முருகன், தன் வேலையும் ஆபரணங்களையும் தூக்கி எறிந்துவிட்டு, பழனி மலைக்கு வந்து தனியாக தவம் இருந்தார். பெற்றோர் அவரைச் சமாதானப்படுத்த வந்தபோது, முருகன் கூறினார்: 'பழம் நீ, நிழல் நான்' — நீங்களே பழம், நான் அதன் நிழல் மட்டுமே. இந்த வார்த்தையே 'பழநி' என்ற ஊர்ப்பெயராக மாறியது. முருகன் இங்கு தண்டாயுதபாணியாக — தண்டு மட்டும் ஏந்திய துறவியாக — நிலைத்து இருக்கிறார்.
Sage Narada arrived at Kailash with a fruit of divine wisdom. Shiva declared it would go to whichever of his sons circled the world first and returned. Murugan immediately mounted his peacock and set off to circle the globe.
Ganesha, however, thought cleverly. He simply walked around his parents, Shiva and Parvati, and said, 'My parents are my entire universe,' thereby winning the fruit without leaving the spot. When Murugan returned after his long journey, he discovered Ganesha had already claimed the prize.
Heartbroken and angry, Murugan threw away his spear and ornaments, and retreated alone to Palani Hill to meditate as an ascetic. When his parents came to console him, Murugan said: 'Pazham nee, nizhal naan' — 'You are the fruit, I am merely its shadow.' These words gave the hill its name, Palani. To this day, Murugan remains here as Dhandayuthapani, the renunciant who holds only a staff.
