Saraswathi Vandanam

✍ Traditional — Various sources 📝 6 lines
📖 About
Saraswathi Vandanam praises the Goddess of learning, arts, music, and wisdom. On Vijayadasami (Ayudha Puja — the 10th day of Navaratri), all tools of one's trade are blessed by Saraswathi — from musical instruments to vehicles to books. Children traditionally begin their formal education (Vidhyarambam) on this day. The white Goddess represents knowledge that is pure, universal, and unattached to worldly gain.

She who is as white as the Kunda flower, the moon, snow, and pearl garland She who is clothed in pure white garments She whose hands are adorned with the Veena (lute) and boon-granting staff She who is seated on a white lotus She who is always worshipped by Brahma, Achyuta (Vishnu), Shankara (Shiva) and other gods May that Goddess Saraswathi protect me She who removes all dullness (jadya) and ignorance completely!
💡 Meaning

This is the most famous Saraswathi prayer, likely from the Yajurveda tradition. The fourfold white imagery: Kunda flower (jasmine-white), moon (cool white), snow (pure white), pearl garland (lustrous white). White symbolizes: knowledge that purifies, truth that transcends color/bias, and consciousness that illuminates. The Veena (lute) represents that she governs all arts through the medium of sound/vibration. Even the Trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva) worships her — meaning knowledge itself is the highest principle.

I always worship the pure white, stainless Saraswathi The giver of all arts and knowledge Worshipped in all Vedic traditions (Nigamas), Her hands holding the Vallaki (lute). She who grants boons, who fulfills all devotees' desires, Granter of knowledge, holding the beautiful Veena, With lotus eyes, with the freshness of new rain clouds (slightly blue-white).
💡 Meaning

"Sakala kala dhaam" — she is the home of ALL arts simultaneously: music, dance, sculpture, painting, poetry, mathematics, astronomy. In the Hindu tradition, all knowledge (vidya) is sacred — there is no separation between science and art, or between secular and sacred knowledge. All knowledge comes from Saraswathi. "Lotus eyes" suggests her gaze is pure, open, and beautiful — like a lotus that opens fully to the light without reserve.

O Giver of boons, O you who take any form desired! O Swan-rider, O white-complexioned Goddess Protect me I have come to you for refuge!
💡 Meaning

"Vidhyarambham karishyaami" — this is the prayer traditionally recited when beginning formal education. On Vijayadasami, children as young as 3 are given their first writing lessons (Ezhuthu initiation) during which the Guru (or parent) guides the child's finger to write "Hari Sri Ganapathaye Namah" in rice or sand. The Swan (Hamsa) vehicle of Saraswathi represents discrimination (Viveka) — the swan is said to be able to separate milk from water, just as the wise person separates truth from falsehood.

We Must Learn the Arts Art is life, art is light Art is the path to Saraswathi's grace! Dancing, singing, painting, performing In each of these, the Goddess shows her compassion. O Mother give us books so we may study! O Mother give us the Veena's music so we may sing! O Mother open the eye of wisdom so we may see! We bow at the feet of Saraswathi Amma.
💡 Meaning

A Tamil prayer in simple, accessible language. The verse makes the profound point: art and knowledge are not decorative extras in life but the very path to divine grace. Each art form — dance, song, painting, performance — is a specific channel through which Saraswathi's compassion (kanivu) flows into human life. The three requests: books (knowledge), music (creative expression), wisdom-eye (spiritual discernment) — represent the three dimensions of a complete education: intellectual, aesthetic, and spiritual.

Vijayadasami Song The day of Ayudha Puja has arrived! Saraswathi Amma has come to the streets! We have placed all our tools and instruments May Jnana Mahalakshmi bless us with well-being! We worshipped the tools (Ayudhas) We worshipped the machines and vehicles We worshipped the artist's paintbrush O Saraswathi Amma please bestow your grace!
💡 Meaning

Ayudha Puja (Vijayadasami) is the festival when tools are worshipped — a profound tradition acknowledging that any tool used with skill and dedication becomes sacred. The carpenter's saw, the musician's instrument, the doctor's scalpel, the farmer's plough, the student's books — all are placed before Saraswathi and blessed. This practice recognizes that all useful skill is ultimately Saraswathi's gift, and all well-made tools are her sacred objects. The tradition prevents arrogance (I made this with MY skill) and cultivates gratitude.

Devotional Chant Victory to Saraswathi! Victory! Victory to Saraswathi the Queen of Queens! Worship! Worship Vani (Speech), the victorious Goddess! Leader of all letters and sounds (Varnas) Giver of all arts and knowledge Granter of the boon of excellent speech! Victory! Victory to Saraswathi! Obeisance to Sharada Devi (autumn Goddess) Obeisance to the giver of learning (Vidya) She who holds the Veena and books She who rides the swan obeisance to you!
💡 Meaning

"Sarva Varna Naayaki" — she is the leader of all Varnas (letters, sounds). In Sanskrit, the 51 letters of the alphabet are considered to be the 51 aspects of the Goddess — each letter is a goddess (Matrika). Saraswathi rules all 51. This explains why the Saraswathi Vandanam covers: spoken word (Vak), written language (letters/Varnas), music (Veena), books (Pustaka), and discriminating wisdom (Hamsa). She is the complete goddess of the entire domain of conscious communication and knowledge.
