Om Aim Hrim Srim (The Bija mantras of the Divine Mother) 1. Obeisance to the Holy Mother (Sri Maata) 2. Obeisance to the Great Queen (Sri Maharajni) 3. Obeisance to the Empress of the Lion Throne 4. Obeisance to She who arose from the fire of consciousness (Chidagni Kunda) 5. Obeisance to She who rose for the welfare of the gods
💡 Meaning

The opening names of Lalitha Sahasranamam establish the Divine Mother's identity. "Sri Maata" = the Holy Mother of all. "Maharajni" = the Great Queen who rules all existence. The Lion Throne (Simhasana) represents supreme authority over all creation. She arose from the fire of pure consciousness (Chit) — meaning she IS consciousness expressing itself as the Divine Mother. She appears specifically "for the welfare of gods" — when cosmic forces of ignorance (demons) threaten cosmic order.

💡 Meaning

"Lalita" means "playful, graceful, charming" — the Divine Mother's nature is not fierce but playful, creating and sustaining the universe as divine play (Lila). "Kameswari" = she who presides over all desires and fulfills them. "Shiva-Shakti-aikya" = the unified form of Shiva and Shakti — she is the point where masculine and feminine consciousness merge. The Lasya dance is Parvati's graceful response to Shiva's fierce Tandava — the feminine principle balancing the masculine.

💡 Meaning

"Shodasakshari" — the 16-syllable Sri Vidya mantra (Ka-Ae-I-La-Hrim, Ha-Sa-Ka-Ha-La-Hrim, Sa-Ka-La-Hrim) is considered the mother of all mantras. "Tripura Sundari" = beautiful in all three states (waking, dreaming, deep sleep), beautiful in all three times (past, present, future), beautiful across all three worlds. She IS the form of all mantras — meaning every sacred sound is ultimately a vibration of her consciousness.

💡 Meaning

"Saubhagya" — this entire section of the Sahasranamam addresses the Divine Mother as the source of all good fortune, prosperity, and auspiciousness. Unlike fearsome aspects of the Goddess, Lalitha specifically embodies beauty, grace, and abundance. These names are particularly recited for marriage blessings, family prosperity, and removal of obstacles to good fortune. The "moon-beauty" names (Soma-Somya) indicate her cooling, nourishing, and healing qualities.

She who is praised by the thousand names of Lalitha She becomes the cause of fulfillment for all beings. Whoever reads or causes others to read (these names) They attain all good fortune. Lalitha-Amba is always the Shakti (power) O Sri Maata (Holy Mother), you are known in my heart You who do all auspicious things, O Goddess Lalite, obeisance to you!
💡 Meaning

The fruit of the Sahasranamam practice is stated simply: reciting or even causing others to recite these thousand names brings "sarva saubhagyam" — all good fortune. The closing verse is a personal prayer: Lalitha is addressed as the ever-present Shakti, as the Holy Mother known in the heart, and as the doer of all auspicious things. The word "Lalite" (O playful one) uses the vocative case — direct address, as if speaking to a dear friend. This is the essence of the Shakta bhakti tradition.

Victory to the Ruler of all! The Power of all! Sri Lalitambike obeisance to You!
💡 Meaning

This concluding devotional verse addresses all the great titles of Lalitha in rapid succession: Mahadevi (Great Goddess), Tripurasundari (beauty across all three realms), Sri Vidya (the sacred knowledge itself), Shiva-Shakti unified, Mother and Witness of the Universe, and ultimately the Cause of the entire Universe. The final "Namaste" is the complete bow — entire being offered at the Divine Mother's feet. This verse can be recited at the beginning and end of the full Sahasranamam recitation.
