சூரபன்மன் 'சிவ சக்தியால் மட்டுமே அழிக்கலாம்' என்ற வரம் பெற்று மூவுலகங்களையும் வென்றான். சிவன் நெற்றி கண்ணிலிருந்து ஆறு தீப்பொறிகள் சரவணப் பொய்கையில் விழுந்தன — ஆறு குழந்தைகளாக பிறந்தன. பார்வதி தழுவ — ஆறும் ஒன்றாக முருகன் ஆனான். திருச்செந்தூர் கடலோரத்தில் நடந்த மஹா யுத்தத்தில் முருகன் சூரபன்மனை வென்றான். சூரபன்மன் மயிலாகவும் சேவலாகவும் ஆனான் — முருகனின் வாகனமும் கொடியும் ஆனான். கந்த சஷ்டி இந்த வெற்றியை கொண்டாடும் ஆறு நாள் திருவிழா.
The demon Soorapadman obtained a boon that only Shiva's energy could destroy him and conquered the three worlds. Shiva sent six sparks from his third eye into Saravana lake — six babies were born. Parvati embraced them — they merged into Murugan. In the great battle at Thiruchendur, Murugan defeated Soorapadman with his divine Vel. Soorapadman became the peacock (vehicle) and rooster (flag). Kanda Sashti — six-day festival at Thiruchendur — celebrates this cosmic victory annually.
